Earth Date Tuesday, 2 October 2012

met at 10 am at the north gate of Qin Shan Shui with Irshad and Lena • found out later that Peter Jackson had tried to meet up with us, but thought schedule was for 10 am at North Gate of campus • took the subway to the Lama Temple stop • got topside and Lena spotted the Costa Coffee and I the KFC

she wanted coffee, and I was feeling a need for some protein • got chicken at KFC and met up with Irshad and Lena at Costa • we sat in the coffee shop and ate and enjoyed the cool ambiance while we shared and reminisced • I got a little emotional and felt so lucky to have such dear friends with whom to share the day • I purchased a bundle of incense from a vendor •  we walked over to the Lama Temple – the largest lamery in Beijing — actually a collection of buildings, temples, and Buddhas assembled together by many leaders of 中國 / Zhōngguó dating back hundreds of years • the place was incredible and rich in history, art, religion, and culture • we took many photos and burned all of our incense

we then walked into one of the nearby hutongs (local neighborhood streets) and came upon one of Lena's favorite restaurants, called Vineyard • we ordered lunch and I then consumed my first stuffed baked potato since leaving the USA as well as brownie sundae • I bargained for and bought two packs for post cards for relatives in the states • we headed, on foot, to the Russian district surrounding the Russian Embassy • we saw many cool buildings and shops

I tried to take a photo of the Russian Embassy but was shoed away by the guards • we then walked to and ate dinner at a Russian restaurant at Lena's recommendation • We had authentic Chicken Kiev • Lena also ordered and ate a dish called, "Herring under a Fur Coat" which I kept referring to as the fish under the ladies' coat and making her laugh • she was in 7th heaven to have access to Russian stuff and feel a little like she was at home • we then walked a long way back to the entrance and took the subway home
